Sometimes, when I wake in the night, I draw my dreams. These spindly missives from my subconscious, translated in the dark, become source material for later drawings. When I began to draw, to really look at my relationship to drawing, I realized a lot of fear in committing to line. So I began to make these drawings in pencil, carved into pools of black ink. They were a way of carving into the blackness of subconsciousness, to see what was there when the ink dried and the water left a pale atmosphere. First came the Endeavor Series, the full name being Endeavor to Use it For the Children of God. These were created at Virginia Center for Creative Arts in 2010, and named for a spam letter I received at that time. I thought of them as forming a sort an abstract children's story of built impossible structures.
DREAM ARCHITECTURE PERFORMANCE
![]() |
Dream Architecture was also a performance in collaboration with composers and musicians Ethan Frederick Greene, Steve Parker, and Liz Lee. Amidst the audience, I painted on rice paper on a small plexiglass surface, filmed and projected. The drawings were based on blind drawing my dreams and in response to the music. |
Ethan Frederick Greene's "Aerial Ballet" solo for cello was based on a poem by Cornelius Eady. The refrain, "I am not done with my falling," as well as my experience/anxieties playing cello since early childhood drew me to this piece, played here by Liz Lee. |
Here is a live camera feed of the same piece. |
Steve Parker's improvised "Sound Collages I-V" responded to my marks, as my marks responded to the sounds of his trombone, breath, and electronics. |
"Environmental Rhythm Etude no. 1" is an electronic piece composed by Ethan Frederick Greene. Here is the live camera feed. |
